University of the Ozarks will be CLOSED Friday, January 10 due to winter weather.

All campus offices will be closed on Friday. Only essential personnel should report to campus. If you are unsure if you should report to work, please contact your supervisor.

Though the campus is open today (Thursday), please keep an eye on the weather this afternoon and talk with your supervisor about leaving early if you are concerned about your commute home.

Please use caution and your best judgment if you have to be on campus in the next few days as walkways and parking lots may be hazardous.

If you need to contact the Office of Public Safety, please call 479-979-2020.

University of the Ozarks has joined into a new aca

University of the Ozarks has joined into a new academic partnership with the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s Carolyn McKelvey Moore School of Nursing for students interested in careers in nursing.

Under the 2+2 articulation agreement, students complete the first two years of study at U of O and transfer all credit hours to UAFS for completion of the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). The pre-nursing track at Ozarks will be implemented beginning the Fall 2025 Semester.

Sunday Stories: With a major in Biology, and minor

Sunday Stories: With a major in Biology, and minors in Chemistry, Athletic Coaching, and Music, current senior Duban Figueroa is pulling from every lens to grow as an athlete, academic, and musician.

“I’ve always been interested in the natural sciences,” he said, as he always enjoyed those subjects in high school, “And Chemistry goes hand in hand with my major.”

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Duban moved when he was 6 to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he ran Track and Cross Country, played multiple sports, and participated in band.

“I had a great, motivational coach in high school who made me fall in love with the sport,” he said. With his minor in Athletic Coaching, Duban aims to inspire others just as his coach inspired him.

Though he was recruited to run for Ozarks, he quickly found that the university had much more to offer beyond athletics. It was his first tour of campus when Duban met President Dunsworth. “It’s not every day that you get to meet the president of a university,” he said. “That set Ozarks apart for me.”

Another special thing that stood out to him was the study abroad program. He always wanted to travel but never had the opportunity until coming to Ozarks. Making use of the resources like the Student Enrichment Fund, he studied in Spain for a semester.

While abroad, he met other international students from much larger universities, but they had to pay much more for the same opportunity. “It wasn’t integrated into their schools like it is here,” Duban explained.

He encourages others to study abroad; “I’m a student ambassador and that’s what I really hit when I’m giving tours. It’s an experience you will never forget.” Now, Duban is applying to various graduate schools in Europe to pursue a PhD in Botany.

Along with improving his mind and body, Duban wants to continue his passion for music as well; “It just flows within the fingers, and tickles my ears. I really like it.” He is one of the first to request a senior recital- a requirement only for music majors.

“That’s what I love about the Lens Program,” he said about the university’s unique curriculum. “It lets me work different parts of my mind.”
