Over the weekend the Walton International Scholars

Over the weekend the Walton International Scholarship Program held their annual gathering at University of the Ozarks, where all three universities (JBU, Harding, and Ozarks), came together for a day filled with fun, connection, and team building as they competed for the inaugural WISP Cup. 🏆

Sunday Stories: A student from the Bahamas, Wannes

Sunday Stories: A student from the Bahamas, Wannessa Hanna, has made her voice known in her freshman year here at Ozarks.

“God has gifted me with music,” Wannessa said. She shared that gift with the Clarksville community this weekend with her performance in the musical theatre ensemble’s production of “The Great Broadway Radio Hour, Live.” She also placed third in the classical category and first in the commercial category in the NATS singing competition in Fayetteville, Ark., at the beginning of March.

“I love performing,” she said. “I grew up singing in church, so that’s something I always felt comfortable doing and I felt called to do it.”

“I resonate the most with gospel music,” she said. However, she began exploring Bahamian secular music when she played in a high school band; “It was a time in my life I felt the most inspired in music, with my community, and with my culture as a whole.”

In 2019, Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas. Wannessa lost loved ones and many of her friends lost their homes. “When that hurricane came, many people’s lives- including me, were changed forever.” The following year, the COVID pandemic spread and Wannessa was homeschooled.

“When I think of home, I think of things I have been through, my family supporting me through that, my teachers, my friends,” she said. “I made it through that for a reason.”

Wannessa said coming to Ozarks “was like starting a new chapter.” When she arrived at the university, she had left her community, her support system, behind. “This is the first time I have ever been away from my family and friends back at home,” she said. “That’s been the hardest adjustment.”

However, the Ozarks community has helped her build a new support system; from professors to new friends, “I have found people I can talk to whenever I’m struggling,” she said.

“Ever since [the hurricane], people on that island have struggled with mental health,” a struggle Wannessa believes is under-supported in her country.

Majoring in music and psychology, Wannessa wants to bring awareness to mental health in the Bahamas, as many others share in the struggles she overcame to be here today.

Sunday Stories - Ever since Genesis Zamora was a little girl, she has been fascinated by
movies. “It’s magic,” she said. “Movies are art,” which is why Genesis, now a senior here at Ozarks, is double majoring in both communications and art. “They go hand in hand,” she explained. “I have always loved movies,” she said. “They are my passion. I remember that’s the one thing I did with my dad: We loved to watch movies together and critique them.”

There was one movie in particular that lit a spark in Genesis’ eyes: “The Grand Budapest Hotel” directed by Wes Anderson. “I fell in love with the graphics,” she said. “I was like ‘How can I create this? I want to do this.’ ” However, Genesis faced a lot of doubts from those around her. “Back in Nicaragua, that major exists, but everyone laughed at me. They would say, ‘What? You’re going to make movies in Nicaragua? That’s crazy - you’re going to starve.’ ” The one place she found support was in her father. “He always believed in me and supported my dreams,” she said in a previous interview with KUOZ.

Genesis then applied to the Walton International Scholarship Program giving her the opportunity to study here at Ozarks, where she then learned about the university’s unique LENS program. To fulfill her degree requirements, Genesis is also minoring in health science- a subject she was reluctant to study. “I was scared to take that minor because I am not a science person,” she said. But much to her surprise,
“It was really interesting what you can learn and apply to your life on a daily basis.”

“You can balance your three degrees,” she explained, as in a nutrition class, Genesis learned how to make better decisions about her health as well as to teach others, and in photography, she learned about composition and held her first camera. “I am really thankful for the LENS program because it has taught me how to be a risk taker and to try something new,” she said.

Now, Genesis is preparing her senior art exhibit on April 26th, and she aims to graduate in May with plans to make a name for herself as an artist in Costa Rica’s expanding entertainment and art industries.

Ambassador Insider: Join Gustavo, a senior interna

Ambassador Insider: Join Gustavo, a senior international student here at Ozarks, as he shares the inspiration behind his studies in business and political science, his experience as a student ambassador, and his leadership role within student organizations.

Gustavo has also secured a spot at ANDA El Salvador as a Regulatory Systemization Intern this summer after graduation. He said that his journey to this opportunity started when he connected with an ANDA representative while giving a campus tour—turning a simple conversation into a career opportunity.

Sunday Stories- Tanzy Wood from Clarksville, Ark.,

Sunday Stories- Tanzy Wood from Clarksville, Ark., has overcome many challenges to become the first in her family to both graduate high school and attend college. Tanzy is a Junior majoring in finance here at Ozarks- “Which is crazy,” she said, “because math has never been easy for me.”

Even though Tanzy is challenged with learning differences, she is not dissuaded from pursuing higher education. “I’ve always maintained good grades,” she said, despite moving homes and schools often during her time in the foster care system, “Which is why I’m so confident in going to college.”

She credits the student support services at Ozarks with a lot of her success; “In the Jones Learning Center, they offer a writing assistant, Debbie Carlton. She has helped me write all of my papers, and she taught me how to do works cited and a bunch of stuff.” It was a strange feeling for Tanzy to have this support because she had never been able to ask for help growing up.

“An accomplishment was not having to be in that building as much,” she said with confidence. “I don’t need y’all anymore!” she exclaimed, not because she no longer appreciates the staff in the student support services, but because they have empowered her to write her own essays, to do her own math, and to accomplish her own goals. “Debbie picked out my weaknesses and even turned them into strengths… How do you do that?!” Tanzy exclaimed. “That just goes to show that if you are willing to invest, you can achieve these things - and I do think that Ozarks has helped me more than I can thank them for.”

Now, Tanzy aims to graduate in May 2026 and wants to be a real estate agent.

Having shared her story with only a select few, Tanzy wants to be a message of encouragement for others who feel bound to their past. “No matter the circumstance, you can push through it,” Tanzy said. “It’s about your mindset.” She believes people need to move past the hardships and not let them determine their future. “I heard a quote the other day: ‘Tough times make tough people.’ That’s so true if you let it.”
