Sunday Stories - Senior Edition🎓: On an accelerated path to success, Nicholas Bennett will soon be graduating from Ozarks with a degree in accounting and in just three years. From Little Elm Texas, Nicholas was pushed by his dad to pursue his dream of playing college baseball. Nicholas found a spot on the team here at Ozarks with Head Baseball Coach Aaron Gentry. “My first year we were really senior-heavy, but that made for a really tight knit group,” he said. A group that is tight and welcoming is something all freshmen need when arriving somewhere new. Outside of baseball, Nicholas experienced the close-knit community feel in his Ozarks seminar class. “The class really made me involved in campus and helped me get to where I am today,” he said. Nicholas is heavily involved on campus in organizations such as the Student Ambassador program, SAAC, FCA, BCM, and the Disc Golf Club. Nicholas credits two people at Ozarks who have helped him succeed in college; the first being his advisor, Accounting Professor Joel Rossmaier. “He really helped me navigate the course catalog and helped me be able to graduate in three years,” he said. “Professor Rossmaier really makes a connection with his students. With us both being Dallas Mavericks fans, conversations easily came about. Now, I find myself going to his office just to chat and checkup.” The other next person who helped Nicholas get off to a good start in college is Vanessa Hollowell, director of the Student Success Center. “I first met her in my Ozarks seminar class and she is the one that pushed me to get involved on campus,” he said. “I love the fact that we have a smaller campus. It makes it really easy to get involved and make personal connections with everyone.” Nicholas will be graduating from Ozarks on May 11 after just three years with a degree in accounting and minors in American Studies and Health Science. Following graduation, he plans to continue to take classes at another university while he prepares to take the CPA exam.

Students from various academic disciplines throughout campus had an opportunity to showcase their scholarly research, communications and fine arts projects this week in the annual A.R.C.H. Symposium. More than 25 students took part in the this year’s A.R.C.H., which stands for Advanced Research and Creative Highlights. The symposium was started in 2013 and features student research and visual art projects from throughout the year. The four categories are, Poster Presentation, Oral Presentation, Visual Arts Display and Multimedia/Storytelling/Performance. The winners of the 2024 A.R.C.H. Symposium will be announced during the University’s 67th annual Honors Day ceremony at 4 p.m., May 1, in Seay Theatre.

Sunday Stories: Thanks to Ozarks, Matthew Kremers’ professional goals are coming into focus. The junior communications major from Subiaco, Arkansas, is already putting his degree to use as an accomplished storyteller through his photography & videography skills. “I got started with the camera when I was in high school,” he said. “I spent a summer digging ditches and had no idea what to do with my extra money.” Matthew realized that the area of Arkansas he lived in needed someone who was really good with a camera, so that’s what he purchased. “I started off really small, just doing AAU tournaments and I found some success, which made it easy to keep going.” Matthew works on a variety of projects, from keepsake memories to highlight videos for kids being recruited. Matthew said his dream is to one day not have to work and to manage people working for him covering all types of sports throughout the Southwest and Midwest. Matthew credits two of his professors for helping him hone his skills at Ozarks. He called Communications Professor Susan Edens a “technical wizard.” “She helps me with things that I glance over because I am self-taught,” he said. “She helps me re-learn things the right way to help me improve my craft.” He also credited Photography Professor Margo Duvall. “She knows a lot about photography and is well versed in that field and has been able to help me a lot since I started on my own,” he said. “Both of these professors are the reason I have developed my skills to where they are today.” Besides professors, his friends have also supported him. “They helped build my confidence into who I am today,” he said. Originally coming to Ozarks to play basketball, Matthew said he stayed because of the small classroom environment, the teachers and staff and the University’s familiarity. “I knew it was a place where I could grow and succeed,” he said. Matthew’s media company @stixx.media has grown and succeeded in step with him through his journey here at Ozarks.
