Clarksville, Ark.-The U of O men's and women's tennis teams opened American Southwest Conference play on Saturday with convincing victories over the University of Texas-Dallas in Dallas.
The Eagles (1-1) won their match 7-0 and the Lady Eagles (1-0) were victorious 6-3. In the 7 1/2-hour men’s match, the Eagles got singles victories from Greg Gilliam, Peter Maxwell, Luke Griffin, Fuyei Xaykaothao, Taylor Dodds and Reggie Brasfield to secure six points. The Eagles also won two of the three doubles matches for the seventh team point. "Our men’s team is hungry to win and they went out and played very well," said tennis coach Sally Wood. "I’m real excited about this season because we have the potential to have one of our best teams ever here." The Lady Eagles got singles victories from Mary Bales, Debbie Giesecke and Julie Parr as well as doubles victories from the teams of Julie Richardson/Jessica Bush, and Liza Talley/Mary Bales to win their first match of the season. The U of O tennis teams will travel to Abilene, Texas, on Feb. 22 to compete in the ASC Individual Invitational Tournament. The women will play host to Southwest Baptist on March 3, and both teams will be at home against John Brown University on March 6.
