Students Recognized During 63rd Honors Day

University of the Ozarks administrators and faculty presented the University’s top academic and division awards during the 63rd annual Honors Day ceremony, held Thursday afternoon via Zoom.

Jake Sawyer, an environmental studies and English major from Mena, Ark., was the recipient of the Wiley Lin Hurie Memorial Award, presented to the outstanding senior in the graduating class as voted on by the faculty. Sawyer was also named the Outstanding Student in English. The Hurie Award is named in honor of the long-time president of the University and is the highest honor given to an Ozarks student.

The award winners in the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts included, Outstanding Student in Art – Megan Johnson; Amanda Alders Pike Art Award – Blanca Almaraz-Martinez; Outstanding Student in English – Jake Sawyer; Outstanding Student in History – Cory Wilhelm; Outstanding Student in Music – Ethan Lubera; Outstanding Student in Philosophy – Melle Van Duijn; Outstanding Student in Religion – Katherine Barnwell; Outstanding Student in Spanish – Melle van Duijn; Outstanding Student in Theatre – Ben Howard; and Outstanding Student in Theatre – Lacye Day.

The awards in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathemaics included, Outstanding Student in Biology – Isaac Julio; Outstanding Student in Chemistry – Edith Anahi Olivas Garrido; Outstanding Student in Health Science – Karlee Hart; Outstanding Student in Physics – Crystal Oudomvilay; Outstanding Student in Psychology – Gladis Yessenia Alvarez Guzman; Outstanding Student in Psychology in Human Behavior – Ashton Huffstutlar; and Outstanding Student in Environmental Studies – Cherokee Gott.

The awards in the Division of Social Sciences included, Outstanding Student in Accounting – Ohany Roman Blandon; Outstanding Student in Business – Gladis Yessenia Alvarez Guzman; Outstanding Student in Business Administration – Rosa Angelica Ordonez; Outstanding Student in Economics – Ralph Jean-Pierre; Outstanding Student in Management – Laura Gochez Sanchez; Outstanding Student in Political Science – Rebecca Watkins; Outstanding Student in Communication Studies – Andrea “Valarie” Carias Morilla; Robert Berry Fulton Award in Communication – Andres Jesus Jimenez Zumbado; Outstanding Student in Art Education – Willow Stratton; Outstanding Student in Education – Lauren Fox; Outstanding Student in Biology Education – Tyler O’Banion; Outstanding Student in Elementary Education – Abigail Mansur; Outstanding Student in Secondary Education – Derrick McKee; and the C. Wright Mills Award in Sociology – Rebecca Peterson.
