Clarksville, Ark.-The U of O softball team ended their season on a high note by sweeping conference opponent University of Texas-Dallas and winning their last seven games.
The Lady Eagles (22-18, 10-14) defeated UT-Dallas 2-0 and 8-6 on Friday and then were victorious 5-2 and 3-2 on Saturday. “I was happy with our season,” said head coach Jon Janssen. “Seven of our nine starters were freshmen and they performed exceptionally well. Our freshmen did a solid job offensively and defensively and we will be able to build around them for next season. Our two players who had college experience, Leigh Thompson and Amanda Luney, had outstanding seasons. Leigh carried us offensively and Amanda was the pitching ace of our squad.” Janssen and his squad have their eyes set on a conference tournament appearance next season. “Our goal next year will be to make the conference tournament,” said Janssen. “We felt like we gave some of our conference games away. We just didn’t get the job done defensively. If we improve on our depth as a team, especially in the pitching rotation, and work on our defensive fundamentals, we should be in the hunt for a conference playoff spot next year.” Thompson led the team in batting (.443), slugging (.615), RBI (37) and hits (54). Thompson ranked near or at the top of each of those categories in the conference. Luney finished the year with a team best 12 wins and 36 strikeouts.
