Clarksville, Ark.-Two former U of O baseball standouts coached the Brazos Valley Bombers to the Texas Collegiate League championship August 14 in Bryan, Texas.
Current U of O assistant baseball coach Robert Mummey served as the Bombers hitting and third base coach this summer. The Bombers are coached by Curt Dixon, who starred on the mound for the Eagles from 2005-2008. Dixon, in his second season as head coach of the Bombers, is the current pitching coach at Eastern Oklahoma State College.
The Bombers capped their historic season with the club’s first Texas Collegiate League championship after posting a 7-5 win over the Victoria Generals last week. Behind Dixon and Mummey, the Bombers finished with a team-best 46-14 record and broke into the national summer poll. The team was named the top collegiate summer team by Perfect Game. Dixon was named the 2013 Texas Collegiate League Coach of the Year.
Both Mummey and Dixon were key parts of the nationally-ranked 2008 Eagles’ team. Mummey was named Second Team All-Conference after hitting 12 home runs and driving in 46 runs. Dixon was voted Honorable Mention All-Conference after finishing with a school record 9-1 mark on the mound. Mummey and Dixon graduated from U of O in 2008.
The Bombers (Bryan, Texas) compete in the six-team league along with the Woodlands Strykers (Spring, Texas), Texas Marshals (Dallas, Texas), East Texas Pump Jacks (Kilgore, Texas), Victoria Generals (Victoria, Texas) and Acadiana Cane Cutters (Youngsville, La.).
