Mitchell Powers To Play For Toms River Hurricanes

Clarksville, Ark.-University of the Ozarks sophomore shortstop Mitchell Powers will play with the Toms River Hurricanes (Toms River, New Jersey) of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League this summer, it was announced this week by Ozarks' Head Coach Jimmy Clark.

Powers, a 6-foot, 195-pound native of North Little Rock, was named Second Team All-Conference in 2011. He led Ozarks in nearly every offensive category, including hits (46), home runs (5), RBI (32), doubles (9), total bases (72), slugging percentage (.471) and at-bats (153). A starter in all 40 games, he finished the year hitting .301, while scoring 23 runs and recording one triple. He also set the new single season school record with 130 assists.

Powers is the only player from Arkansas listed on the Hurricanes roster. The organization produced professional players Casey Gaynor (Cleveland Indians) and Patty Matera (Newark Bears) in 2010.

Play in the wood bat league opened May 24.

The Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League, based in Middleton, New Jersey, is made up of eight teams, including the Toms River Hurricanes (Toms River, NJ), the East Morris Blues (Madison, NJ), the Jackson Thunder (Jackson, NJ), the Protocall Starz (Medford, NJ), the Monmouth Monarchs (Holmdel, NJ), the Middlesex Rays (Middlesex, NJ), the Freehold Clippers (Freehold, NJ) and the Ocean Sports Academy Marlins (Ocean Township, NJ). In 1998, Toms River East Little League won the Little League World Series. Toms River can be seen in various TV and news media including MTV’s Made and Jersey Shore, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and the original The Amityville Horror movie.
