Clarksville, Ark.-University of the Ozarks junior third baseman Leigh Thompson continues to put up impressive offensive numbers for the Lady Eagles (14-9, 6-6) softball squad.
Thompson, a native of Harrison, currently leads the American Southwest Conference in batting (.473), runs batted in (27), doubles (11) and total bases (51). Thompson is also third in the ASC in hits (35). “I knew Leigh could be an impact player for us,” said head coach Jon Janssen. “She was an excellent hitter during her career at Northark, so she has made the transition quite well. She has carried us offensively so far and I look for her to continue to do a lot of good things for our program.” Before coming to Ozarks, Thompson starred at Northark where she was an all-region performer during her two seasons as a Lady Pioneer. According to Janssen, Thompson has done much more than put up gaudy numbers. “You won’t find anyone on our team work harder to improve themselves than Leigh,” said Janssen. “She has really stepped up and been a promising leader for us. The other girls look at her as an example and they want to be at her level. ” She has been named ASC Hitter of the Week once this season and is a leading candidate for conference Newcomer of the Year honors. “Her biggest strength at the plate is her patience,” said Janssen. “She doesn’t let the pitcher dictate what she will hit. She has only walked once this year and that’s indicative of her patience at the plate.”
