Clarksville, Ark.-Ozarks used a three-run first inning to pick up a 3-2 win over LeTourneau University in the second game of a double-header Friday in American Southwest Conference play.
The Lady Eagles (7-13, 1-5 ASC) were shutout 9-0 in game one after recording just two hits.
In game two, Ozarks collected four hits in the first frame and took advantage of an error to take an early 3-0 lead. Nicole Ashley and Ali Mathis had back-to-back singles to reach base, and a LeTourneau miscue in Ozarks next at-bat allowed Ashley to cross the plate. Morgan Goates and Emily Burns each ripped RBI singles to add to the lead. Starter Kelsey Mefford kept LeTourneau (9-9, 1-7 ASC) off the board until the fourth when the visitors had three hits and scored once. The YellowJackets added another run in the fifth thanks to an Ozarks’ error. However, Mefford and company didn’t allow a run in the final two innings of play to secure the win. Mefford’s only strikeout of the game came against the final batter to end the game.
Ashley and Mathis each went 2-for-3 for Ozarks.
Mefford (2-3) went the entire seven innings to receive the win.
LeTourneau’s Kelsie Stephenson threw a two-hitter and Ozarks’ defense committed five errors in game one’s loss.
LeTourneau put Ozarks in the hole after scoring four runs in the first frame. LeTourneau produced runs in each inning thereafter to record the run-rule win. Ashley and Sarah Otteman had hits for the Lady Eagles. Stephany Henson (4-6) took the loss.
Ozarks will continue its ASC series against LeTourneau with a double-header beginning at 12:00 p.m.
