Clarksville, Ark.-The women's basketball team was defeated by American Southwest Conference West division opponent Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, on Monday night.

The Lady Eagles (3-5, 0-0) fell 63-46 to the Lady Yellow Jackets (9-1, 1-0) despite a double-double by sophomore post Mandi Carter. Carter led the squad with 18 points and 12 rebounds while hitting 9-of-17 from the field. The Lady Eagles hit just 25 percent of their shots from the field in the first half and went into intermission trailing 31-19. The Lady Eagles fought back in the second half and pulled with ten points after Jenna Corbell hit a jumper at the 16:19 mark. Ozarks again would slowly cut into the Lady Yellow Jackets lead when Carter scored on a layup with 10:37 left in the game to make the score 45-35. Ozarks, however, was unable to hold Howard Payne’s balanced scoring attack in the second half and could never cut the deficit under ten points. Jenna Corbell recorded 14 points and surpassed the 1,000-career point plateau. Corbell, a graduate of Ashdown High School, has now scored 1,002 points in her career and is just 99 points shy of cracking Ozarks’ top ten career scoring list. Ozarks returns to Clarksville for a five-game home stand starting Thursday with a double-header against Schreiner and continuing with a Saturday afternoon twinbill against Texas Lutheran. On Tuesday, January 13, both squads will host Austin College in what will be Ozarks first games that count in the conference standings.
