San Jose, Calif.-The University of the Ozarks men's soccer team opened the 2006 season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Menlo College on Friday afternoon in San Jose, California.
Three freshmen provided the offensive firepower to upend the home team. Brandon VanCleave scored the Eagles first goal of the season in the 35th minute on a pass from Brandon Cain. VanCleave’s first collegiate career would give Ozarks (1-0-0, 0-0-0) a 1-0 lead at the half. Ozarks continued their scoring ways in the second half when Shaun Renfro put one in the net in the 58th minute. Ryan Skelly received the assist. The final goal of the match came in the 65th minute when Brandon Cain scored. VanCleave received the assist. Meanwhile goalkeeper Brian Sarber and Jeffery Envoldsen kept Menlo College (0-1-0, 0-0-0) off the board by collecting two and one save, respectively. Sarber played 70 minutes and Enevoldsen played 20 minutes to give Ozarks the shutout. Ozarks out shot Menlo 22-7. Skelly had a team-best 5 shots and Jared Gordon had 4 shots. The Eagles will play UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
