FARMERS BRANCH, Texas ?? The American Southwest Conference's annual First Pitch Softball Tournament is slated for Friday and Saturday (March 4-5) at Oran Good Park in Farmers Branch, Texas.
All of the league’s 14 teams will be in action, playing two cross-divisional games each day. Action gets underway at 10 a.m. both days.
The games do not count toward conference records, only overall and in-region, but bragging rights are at stake. Last season, the East Division defeated the West 21-7.
Three ASC teams enter the tournament nationally ranked in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Top 25 Poll, released on March 2. Louisiana College is ranked No. 2, East Texas Baptist is No. 4 and Texas-Tyler is No. 25. Mary Hardin-Baylor is receiving votes.
ASC preseason players of the year will be in action, including sophomore outfielder Joey Cronin of Texas-Tyler, senior right-handed pitcher Rene Schwartzenburg of Louisiana College, senior right-hander Megann Lewis of Hardin-Simmons and senior first baseman Ashley Silva of Howard Payne.
Louisiana College has won a record 27 consecutive games at the ASC First Pitch Softball Tournament, with its last loss coming in the 2004 season to Texas Lutheran. Texas-Tyler has won 17 straight at the event.
NOTES: Admission prices will be $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, $3 for students (age 6 through high school) and $3 for students from ASC schools (with valid 2010-11 ID). Children under age 5 will not be charged. No complimentary passes will be accepted. . . . Official tournament long sleeve T-shirts will be available for $15 each (cash preferred, no credit cards). A limited number of ASC 15-Year Anniversary short-sleeve T-shirts will be $10. Schedule/Roster sheets will be free. . . .
