Clarksville, Ark.-The U of O men's basketball team went 2-0 at the Hendrix Classic over the weekend to give Matt O'Connor two wins to open the season.
On Friday, the Eagles defeated Rust College 87-61 in Matt O’Connor’s head coaching debut. The Eagles had a 43-31 lead at halftime on the strength of its three-point shooting. U of O hit 8 of 15 attempts beyond the arc including a V.J Akers trey to give the Eagles a 18-17 lead with 11:30 left in the half. Brent Gibbs and Mandrell Howell each scored 15 points in the win. Brent Johnson had 13 points and Brian Henderson scored 10 points. Anthony Peterson had a team high eight rebounds. On Saturday, the Eagles defeated Central Baptist College 89-71. U of O shot 34 of 48 free throw attempts in the game. The Eagles outscored CBC 55-41 in the second half but only led 34-30 at intermission. Henderson and Ricky Johnson each scored 18 points to lead the Eagles. Gibbs added 16 points.
