Cory Briggs Named ASC Hitter of the Week

Clarksville, Ark.-University of the Ozarks sophomore shortstop Cory Briggs was named the American Southwest Conference East Division Hitter of the Week, it was announced by ASC Media Relations Director Greg Weghorst on Monday.

Briggs, a 6-foot, 200-pound native of Greencastle, Pa., helped No. 23 Ozarks (30-9, 13-5 ASC) to a 3-1 record in non-conference play last week. Briggs went 10-for-16 (.625) with two home runs and two doubles over four games, including a 4-for-5 performance against NCAA Division II Arkansas Tech April 16. Briggs also drove in six runs, scored five times, walked twice and stole two bases. His hit streak is now at 14 games.

The right-handed Briggs is closing in on winning the ASC regular season batting title with a .487 average. He leads the team in numerous offensive categories, including hits (74), runs (53), RBI (52), total bases (115) and doubles (18). He is ranked among the top-25 NCAA III leaders in batting, runs, hits, doubles and total bases. His RBI and double totals are single-season school records. He leads the team in multiple-hit games (25) and multiple-RBI games (15). He earned ASC All-East Division Honorable Mention honors last season.

He is a graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School where he was named Player of the Year in the Capital Division as a senior.

Ozarks will head to Austin, Texas, to face Concordia University Texas for the first round of the playoffs April 25-26.
