Clarksville, Ark. - - A pair of goals within the final seven minutes of play wasn't enough for the University of the Ozarks men's soccer team as Austin College held on for a 3-2 victory over the Eagles in non-conference play on Sunday afternoon.
Austin College (4-3-0, 0-0-0) held a 2-0 lead at halftime behind a Stephen Carpenter goal in the 15th minute and an Alex Dawson goal in the 18th minute. Ozarks (4-4-1, 1-2-0), meanwhile, couldn’t find the back of the net despite recording 11 shots in the first half.<#IMAGE:1#> Behind a vocal home crowd, the Eagles had their chances to score against their old American Southwest Conference rivals in the second half, and did just that when Ryan Skelly nailed a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Skelly’s goal would begin a frenzied ending to the match. Ozarks’ goal was offset minutes later when Carpenter netted a security score in the 86th minute to push the lead to 3-1. Ozarks, however, would score in the 87th minute of a perfectly executed play by Dylan Evans and Darren Clark. Clark crossed one in the box to a diving Evans who headed it in for the score. Austin College then fought off a flurry of Ozarks’ shots in the remaining three minutes to hold onto the victory. The Eagles out shot the Kangaroos 21-9 in the match. Clark and Brandon VanCleave had 4 shots apiece for Ozarks. Ozarks goalkeepers Brian Sarber and Jeffery Enevoldsen split time in goal, with Sarber recording 1 save and Enevoldsen notching 5. The Eagles will host Louisiana College on September 29 and Mississippi College on September 30 in ASC action.
