Abilene, Texas-Tennis teams in the American Southwest Conference will be able to get an early-season look at each other during the annual American Southwest Conference Singles/Doubles Fall Tournament being held Thursday through Saturday (Sept. 15-17) at McMurry University?s Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center and Hardin-Simmons University?s HSU Tennis Complex. Some matches will also be held at Abilene Christian University?s Eager Tennis Center.
The tourney, being played in September for the seventh straight year, will feature a nine-flight singles format for the men and an eight-flight format for the women. The men will play a five-flight doubles format, while the women will go four. McMurry head coach Mark Hathorn and Hardin-Simmons head coach Shane Williford will serve as co-hosts.
“We’re excited to get the season underway and I know all the teams will be looking to get a feel for how the spring will be,” Hathorn said. “We’ll have matches at McMurry, Hardin-Simmons and Abilene Christian. It’s a lot of matches in three days and will give our new kids some experience and give the veterans a chance to get back into the groove.”
Added Williford: “It’s great to see almost all of the schools in our conference all in one tournament. The level of competition has continued to improve over the years making this a great event. It is also exciting to have new comers from the east as well as new coaches from both the East Division and West Division.”
Doubles action will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, with singles play starting at 8 a.m. on Friday. Both singles and doubles championships are slated for Saturday at a time to be announced.
