University of the Ozarks will be one of the sponsors for the 2016 Spring Greening Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, April 23, in downtown Clarksville.

The event, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., is a community-wide celebration promoting community involvement, environmental awareness and healthy lifestyles. It is being held in conjunction with the opening of the Johnson County Community Farmer’s Market.

The family-friendly event will include, face-painting, live music, a climbing wall, bounce houses, tree giveaways, animals from Needy Paws, an appearance from Smokey the Bear, bike rides, educational booths, and snow cones. There will also be a 3K fun run beginning at 7:45 a.m.

The university’s Campus Activities Board is assisting in the event as are several U of O students, faculty and staff, including senior Nena Evans, who heads up the 2016 Spring Greening Celebration planning committee.

"The mission of this event is to promote community involvement, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles," Evans said. "This is an ideal opportunity to let the community know of the great things going on in this county, to highlight the local businesses, to have fun and to foster a stronger bond between the university and the city. It’s a time to celebrate spring and the coming together of our community."

Other sponsors include GreenSource Recycling, Johnson County Community Farmer’s Market, Needy Paws Animal Shelter, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas Forestry Commission, Clarksville Tree Board, and the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission.
