2012 American Southwest Conference Cross Country Championships Set for Saturday

Richardson, Texas-The 2012 American Southwest Conference Cross Country Championships are set for Saturday (Oct. 27), hosted by Mississippi College at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss.

The women will run a 6K and begin at 8:30 a.m., while the men will compete in an 8K with a start time of 9:15 a.m.

“The weather is going to be great on Saturday morning for the ASC Cross Country Championships and the course is in great shape” Mississippi College head coach Butch Ard said. “So it should be a great day for fast times and great competition.”

The 13-team women’s field consists of Concordia Texas, East Texas Baptist, Hardin-Simmons, Howard Payne, LeTourneau, Louisiana College, Mississippi College, Ozarks, Schreiner, Sul Ross State, Texas-Dallas, Texas-Tyler and Texas Lutheran. Concordia Texas is the defending conference champion, coming off its first title in program history. Now graduated Alaisha Guerra of former league member McMurry won the individual crown last year with a 6K mark of 23:54.18.

Concordia Texas, LeTourneau, Mississippi College and Texas-Tyler have all posted team wins this season. Mississippi College senior Jennifer Cooper owns the conference’s top time in the 6K this year with a 22:43.30, edging sophomore teammate Meredith Johnson’s mark of 23:02.50.
LeTourneau senior Nicole Leman has the ASC’s third-best 6K time with a 23:18.05, but is tops in all other distances (18:18.70 in 3-mile; 13:11.00 in 4K; and 19:12.00 in 5K).

The 12-team men’s field will be composed of Concordia Texas, East Texas Baptist, Hardin-Simmons, Howard Payne, LeTourneau, Louisiana College, Mississippi College, Ozarks, Schreiner, Sul Ross State, Texas-Dallas and Texas-Tyler. UT Tyler is the two-time defending champion and has won six of the last seven conference titles. UT Tyler’s Ross Renfroe won the individual crown last year with an 8K time of 25:42.30, but has since graduated.

LeTourneau and UT Tyler have each posted team wins this season.

Mississippi College senior Tino Gonzalez holds the ASC’s top time in the 8K this season with a 26:42.04, just ahead of junior Nick Huff (26:45.80) and senior Will Krogman (26:55.00) of UT Tyler. Owners of top times in other distances include: LeTourneau sophomore Peter Martin (16:07.40 in 3-mile and 20:49.00 in 4-mile); Hardin-Simmons freshman Chad Cotton (16:21.27 in 5K); and Texas-Dallas junior Jordan Newcomer (37:55.80 in 10K).
