Clarksville, Ark. -- The University of the Ozarks cheerleading squad took home a pair of trophies and several ribbons in the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Spirit Camp, held July 24-26 at Missouri State University.

U of O participants included captain Marissa Merritt of Clarksville; co-captain Rachel Butts of White Hall, Ark.; Jennifer Fretwell of Clarksville; and Brett Spahn of Greenwood, Ark.

The U of O team finished fourth in the Cheer Competition in the nine-team Small Co-Ed Division. Ozarks also took home the Leadership Award, which is voted on by the other teams in the camp based on attitude and overall cheering. The U of O squad also won Blue Ribbons in all four competitions it competed in.

Merritt was chosen as one of the top 50 camp participants, and was invited to try out for next summer’s UCA camp staff.

"This was the first time a U of O squad has participated in a spirit camp," said U of O Cheerleading Sponsor Kay Merritt. "Overall, it went better than we expected, especially considering we were competing against colleges three times bigger than us and with squads that had been to camps quite a few times. Our cheerleaders are looking forward to showing their new skills during the upcoming school year."
