University of the Ozarks recently became the beneficiary of more than $900,000 from a trust by the late Mildred Cox Chapman ’43.
Three endowments related to the science program at Ozarks have been established with the gift, which totaled $908,481.
A total of $648,481 will go toward the scholarship endowment in Chapman’s name for students pursuing majors in the sciences, and $250,000 will go toward an endowment for the Wilson Science Center. In honor of the gift to the science center, the University has named the Mildred Cox Chapman ’43 Microbiology Lab in her memory. The final $10,000 will be used to establish the Mildred Cox Chapman ’43 Outstanding Student in Biology Award endowment.
Chapman graduated from Ozarks in 1943 with a degree in biology and served as secretary-treasurer of her senior class. During her time at Ozarks, she was a member of Delta Chi, Alpha Beta Phi honor society and was a member of the Science Club.
Lori McBee, vice president for advancement and alumni engagement, said planned giving gifts like the Chapman trust are vital to the University.
“At University of the Ozarks, planned gifts have helped shape the future of generations of students,” McBee said. “From scholarships and academic programs to facilities and endowments, these thoughtful contributions ensure the mission of the University continues to thrive well into the future.”
McBee said planned giving gifts can come in many forms, including bequests in a will or trust, retirement assets or life insurance, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and real estate or appreciated securities.
“When it comes to making a lasting impact, few choices are as meaningful — or as personal — as a planned gift,” McBee said. “Planned giving is the process of making a charitable contribution as part of your overall financial or estate planning. It allows you to support the causes you care about most while achieving your own financial and philanthropic goals. Planning your legacy doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you’re just beginning to consider your options or are ready to include a bequest in your will, we’re here to help. “
