Clarksville, Ark. --- Dr. Alan Diekman, Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UAMS, will give a presentation at Ozarks on Monday, November 21.
The presentation will include a discussion of Dr. Diekman’s current research, which is a study of the carbohydrate-binding protein galectin-3, and its interactions with prostate specific antigen (PSA) in normal reproduction and prostate cancer. He will also talk with students about internship opportunities in his department.
Dr. Diekman’s presentation is being hosted by the Ozarks Biological Society (OBS). According to OBS President, Andrea Muffuletto, the purpose for these presentations is two-fold: they give the guest speakers an opportunity to discuss their program and/or research, and they give students an idea of different options they can pursue for internships and after they receive their undergraduate degree.
"We want to give people the opportunity to network," said Sabrina Goddard, OBS Historian. "That’s actually how Andrea and I learned about the internships we did last summer. Dr. Alan Tackett [from UAMS] came to speak to us last year, and he stayed after and talked with us. He recommended that we apply for his internship program."
Dr. Diekman received his undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry from Hope College, in Holland, Michigan. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cellular Biology from Northwestern University in 1994. He joined the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the College of Medicine at UAMS in 2002 where is now Associate Professor and Director of the Medical Biochemistry course.
The presentation will begin at 7:00 pm in room 129 of the Smith-Broyles Science Center. It is free and open to the public.
