"Sylvia" at 7:30 p.m. April 13 and 14 in Seay Theatre of the Walton Fine Arts Center on the U of O campus. ???The production, written by A.R. Gurney, Jr., will be directed by Dr. Pat Farmer, Walton Professor of Theatre at Ozarks. General admission is $5.
Described as a warm and funny play about a marriage and a dog, "Sylvia" centers around Greg and Kate, a married couple who have moved to Manhattan after 22 years in the suburbs. Greg’s career on Wall Street is winding down, while Kate’s career as a public school teacher is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park, bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. ???Reviewing the New York production, The New York Times called the play "delicious and dizzy." Backstage magazine said the play was "howlingly funny. Gurney’s mad comedy is the most endearing good time trot down in the pike in many a moon." ??? The cast includes, junior Megann McManus of El Dorado, Ark., as Sylvia; freshman Johnny Waldrop of Mesquite, Texas, as Greg; freshman Misti-Nicole Ponder of Murfreesboro, Ark., as Kate; freshman April James of Shreveport, La., as Phyllis; senior Cooper Mann of Beebe, Ark., as Tom; and freshman Matt Yetter of Claremore, Okla., as Leslie. ??? The artistic staff includes, professor Bruce B. Brown, scenery and costume; Katari Hawthrone, lighting design; Jennifer Kreienheder, graphic design; Nathan Sain, sound design; and Dustin Campbell, stage manager.
