Clarksville, Ark. --- Doris Bird of Clarksville has established an endowed scholarship at the University of the Ozarks in memory of her late husband, Huie Bird.

The Huie Bird Memorial Scholarship will provide financial assistance for selected students from Johnson County to attend the university. Students who receive the scholarship must be determined to have need as based on criteria used by the university’s Office of Financial Aid.
The Birds are long-time supporters of the university. Doris is a past member of the University’s Board of Trustees.
Huie, who passed away on June 21, 2010, worked many years as a dragline operator before the Birds began a long career in the hospitality industry. He and Doris owned restaurants and hotels in Clarksville and Russellville as well as in Oklahoma and Missouri. Currently, Birds’ Hospitality, Inc. owns and operates the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Clarksville as well as the Hampton Inn, Fairfield Inn & Suites, and Best Western Inn, all in Russellville. The Birds have two daughters, Peggy Cogan and Nancy Rogers, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
