Clarksville, Ark.-The University of the Ozarks women's basketball team hosted the Area 4 Special Olympics Basketball Tournament March 6 in Mabee gymnasium.

Four co-ed teams from around the area participated in the event for a chance to advance to the state tournament held in Russellville. U of O assistant women’s basketball coach Joey Curtis was pleased to be able to help with the tourney.

“It was a good experience for the team,” said Curtis. “The girls had a lot of fun. We were glad to have the opportunity to help out with such a worthy cause.”

Those members of the women’s team volunteering for the event were Danielle Froggatt, Ally Goddard, Sabrina Goddard, Ashley Teague, Alison Villines, April Young and coaches Christina Jost, Emma Bottorff and Curtis. The team provided assistance with a skills challenge test as well as refereeing games throughout the day.

The tournament brought in approximate 25-30 players, including a team from Clarksville’s Forrester-Davis Development Center. Jerry Bridges, who is the co-director of the Area 4 Specials Olympics-Arkansas and a 1978 Ozarks’ alumnus, coordinated the event. Those interested in volunteering with the Special Olympics can contact Bridges at 479-414-8128 or jerry252@centurytel.net.
