University to offer learning disabilities workshop

Clarksville, Ark. -- University of the Ozarks' Jones Learning Center will present its sixth annual one-day workshop on learning disabilities entitled "Preparing for Success" on Thursday, Sept. 13.

The workshop, which will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will be taught by JLC staff members and is for educators, parents and students. It will emphasize ways to better understand students with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders, as well as provide strategies to ensure their success in education and in life.

Some of the session topics include, Growing up with ADD, LD Simulation, Using Technology to Foster Independence in Students With Learning Disabilities, Understanding the Disability to Shape the Future, Differences to Expect Between High School and College, Time Management and Study Skills for Students with Learning Disabilities, and Tips, Tools and Techniques for Academic Success.

The U of O’s Jones Learning Center, established in 1971, was one of the first programs in the country to offer assistance to students with learning disabilities in a college setting.

Registration fees for the workshop are $100 for educators and parents and $35 for students and include a continental breakfast and lunch. There is a discount for those who register before Sept. 1. All proceeds from the workshop will go toward the Shelli Stewart Lamberson Memorial Scholarship Fund for students who use Learning Center services.
