Bolstered by the largest incoming new student class in 12 years and a retention rate approaching 80 percent, University of the Ozarks officials announced Wednesday that they have closed admission for the Fall 2015 semester.

Ozarks is expecting 270 first-time students to begin classes on Aug. 25, the largest incoming class since 279 in 2003. Total enrollment of new and returning students is expected to be 650, which would be the university’s largest since 2008 and an 11 percent increase over last year’s figure of 587. The official enrollment count is recorded on the 11th day of classes.

U of O President Richard Dunsworth said "that while Ozarks’ long-term enrollment goal is 700 plus, the university is committed to providing high quality as it grows."

Dunsworth, who is entering his third year as president, said he believes the reasons for the double-digit percentage increase in enrollment is the fact that Ozarks has frozen the cost of tuition, room and fees for multiple years as well as the highest retention mark for returning students in recent years.

"We’re being true to our mission to prepare students to live a full life and delivering on our mission, and I believe that resonates with students and parents," said Dunsworth. "The administrators and trustees at University of the Ozarks are aware of families’ concerns about affording college, and we are committed to making a high quality private college education attainable."

Dunsworth said the university’s admission counselors and athletic coaches will begin recruiting for next year’s class in about six weeks.

"There’s an exciting buzz about this university and our counselors and coaches are seeing and hearing about it from students when they are out recruiting," Dunsworth said.  "Students want to be a part of this university and that’s a tribute to the great work our university family is doing, from our faculty, staff, coaches and current students to our alumni and supporters."
