U of O to sponsor Community Education classes

Clarksville, Ark. ---The University of the Ozarks Community Education Program will offer a variety of classes and workshops this fall for adults in the community.

On Saturday, Oct. 9, Mandy Myers will lead a one-day workshop titled Hassle-free Holiday Hosting. This hands-on course will cover menu planning, food preparation and table decor. The $20 fee includes instruction, menu planner, shopping list, preparation schedule, table d?cor and a gourmet meal prepared by the participants. Myers was recently a finalist in the national Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest held in California. The class runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also on Oct. 9, Dr. Ben Myers, professor of English at U of O, will lead a one-day class called Making Poetry from Your Memories. This class, which runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and cost $15, will help people turn their life experiences into poetry to share with others. Topics that will be covered include, putting your thoughts into a rhythm, finding the “right” word, using metaphor to explain the unexplainable, and how to find a publisher. In October and November, the university will sponsor several Tuesday evening classes titled Understanding Contemporary Islam, led by visiting Muslim scholar Dr. Izzud-Din Musa. The classes, which are free and open to everyone, will address the diversity of Muslim practices and attitudes toward the West. The classes will run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 19 and 26 and Nov. 2, 9, 16 and 23. The classes will be structured so that people can attend either a few or all of them. On Saturday, Nov. 6, a workshop called Radio Air Talent 101 will be held. This course, under the direction of university radio station KUOZ-FM 100.5 manager Susan Edens, will teach the basics of producing air shift for the radio using digital broadcasting software. Participants in this class will have the opportunity to continue their training by serving as an actual KUOZ “Outback Guide” (disc jockey) once a week through mid-December. The fee is $20 and the class runs from 3 to 6 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 6, Amy Oatis, a consultant for Close to My Heart scrapbooking, will lead a workshop titled Photo and Document Preservation from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This class will teach how to safely place photographs in albums, how to protect irreplaceable items and how to safely remove photographs from albums. The workshop fee of $20 includes all supplies. In November, Ginny Sain, director of the U of O Children’s Theater Program, will lead a series of workshops on Monday evenings called On Stage: A Beginning Acting Class for Adults. Participants will learn the fundamentals of acting and will work from scenes and monologues of classic American plays. Classes will focus on character analysis and development, staging, vocal/physical/mental preparation and basic tips for better performances. The series will conclude with an opportunity to perform on stage in front of a live audience. The workshop, which costs $25, will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 1, Nov. 8, Nov. 15 and Nov. 22. On Saturday, Dec. 4, a one-day workshop called Calendar Creation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Led by Oatis, the class will decorate an events calendar that can be used year after year to record birthdays, anniversaries and other events. Participants are encouraged to bring photographs, drawings or other media to decorate their calendars. The $15 fee includes some supplies. All of the Community Education class sizes are limited, so early registration is encouraged.
