CLARKSVILLE, Ark. ---For the fourth consecutive year the University of the Ozarks will offer Johnson County high school students an opportunity to earn college credit through its Concurrent High School Program for the 2000-01 academic year.

The program allows county students in their junior or senior year of high school to take college classes at U of O and earn both college and high school credits. The students must meet certain criteria and be approved by both their high school principals and U of O. ??? "The university has a long history of providing services to the residents of the local area and this is one of the many ways we want to continue to serve Johnson County," said Jim Decker, director of admissions at Ozarks. "It’s a wonderful opportunity for high school students to earn college credit and to experience what college is like before they even graduate from high school." ??? Decker said Ozarks’ Concurrent High School Program received rave reviews in a meeting earlier this month between administrators from all of the Johnson County school districts and officials from U of O. ??? "There’s always been a spirit of cooperation and support between the university and the schools in Johnson County and this is another way to continue that great relationship," Decker said. ??? In most cases, if students meet the qualifications and are approved, the Concurrent High School Program provides for free tuition, and the only cost incurred is for books and lab fees. ??? Decker said that more than 35 Johnson County high school students have taken advantage of the program since its inception in 1997. ??? "If a student were to begin participating in this program in their junior year, they could have a whole semester of college completed by the time they graduated high school," Decker said. "It would be a great head start on college." ??? For more information on the U of O Concurrent High School program, contact the principal or counselor at your high school, or the U of O Admissions Office at 979-1227.
