State director of Small Business Administration to visit campus March 9

Clarksville, Ark. --- Linda R. Nelson, director for the Arkansas district of the U.S. Small Business Administration, will speak at University of the Ozarks at 11 a.m., Friday, March 9, as part of the university's SIFE/PBL Distinguished Speakers Series.

Linda R. Nelson, director for the Arkansas district of the U.S. Small Business Administration, will be the guest speaker for the SIFE/PBL Distinguished Speakers Series

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Baldor Auditorium, located in the Boreham Business Building. The title of Nelson’s talk will be "Survive & Thrive." She will discuss how small business owners and entrepreneurs can be successful in today’s economy. The speaker series is presented by the university’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) and Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) student organizations.

Nelson, a certified public accountant, has headed the Arkansas district of the SBA since 2004. She is responsible for directing SBA activities in the state, including finance, counseling, training, and government procurement programs specifically designed to foster the formation and growth of small business.  She is also responsible for the oversight of the office’s resource partners:  the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center and its six sub-centers; and three active SCORE Chapters.

The district office consists of Nelson and nine additional staff members, plus a counsel who is assigned to the Office of General Counsel.  They are responsible for delivery of all programs, as well as compliance issues, for the whole state of 75 counties covering 52,000 square miles.

A graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Nelson began her SBA career in 1967 and has served the Arkansas district office in numerous positions, as well as a six-month tour of duty beginning January of 2004 at the then newly opened National Guaranty Purchase Center in Herndon, Va., as the assistant director for Guaranty Purchases. In 2000, Nelson was named the Outstanding CPA in Government by the Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants.  She is a member of the Arkansas Society of CPAs, and is also a member of the American Institute of CPAs, and the District Export Council for Arkansas.
