Clarksville, Ark.-Simpson College got an outstanding pitching performance from right-hander Mike Huyser for a 14-2 game one win and then escaped with a 9-6 extra inning win in game two to complete a double-header sweep Friday in Clarksville.
Huyser (1-0) allowed just one hit in five innings of work and the Simpson College offense provided 11 runs through four frames to help the Storm (2-0) in game one. Simpson jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after three innings, but then got seven runs in the fourth to take a commanding 11-0 advantage. Trailing 14-0, Ozarks (2-6) scored on a Tony Morales RBI single and a balk in the seventh.
Travis Conner (0-1) started and went three innings to receive the loss. Chris Young went 2-for-2 at the plate.
In game two, Simpson College got a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth to even the score at 6-6, and then scored three more runs with two outs in the top of the tenth to complete the comeback. Simpson plated two runs in the second and would hold Ozarks scoreless until the sixth inning when Mitchell Powers crossed the plate from third on an error by the shortstop. The Storm added three runs in the seventh, but Ozarks battled back and took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh behind four hits. Zac Mitchell started the rally in the seventh with a single to left field. Hunter Guffey followed with a walk and Brandon Brewer reached base on a single to load the bases. However, the Storm forced a double play in Ozarks next at-bat. But Powers delivered a single to score two runs to give Ozarks momentum. Michael Prusator was hit by a pitch and Tony Morales worked a walk to again load the bases. Powers later scored on a wild pitch and Freddy Prince doubled in two more runs to put Ozark ahead 6-5.
Jeffrey Works (0-1) took the loss in relief. Tyler Erickson started and went seven innings.
Powers finished 3-for-5 with two RBI. Morales also had two hits.
The Eagles will conclude their series against Simpson College tomorrow in a nine-inning game at 12:00 p.m.
