Kurt Shemanske, 2014 University of the Ozarks graduate, recently secured a position working with the executive vice president of Dillard's, Inc. in Little Rock, Ark. as part of the Arkansas Fellowship.

The Arkansas Fellowship is a two-year fellowship program designed to keep Arkansas’ best business graduates in the state by pairing a select group of recent college graduates with the state’s elite companies.

Shemanske, who earned a degree in management/administration from Ozarks, applied to become a fellow earlier this year and after being selected went on his first round of interviews.

"I met with one of the founders of the program in Little Rock. It went really well. He told me that he would highly recommend me to the fellowship’s partner companies," Shemanske explained.

After the initial interview, Shemanske was called in for what he termed the "speed dating" round.

"There were 12 companies and 25 fellows there," Shemanske said. "Each company selected eight candidates they wanted to interview. We got 20 minutes with each company, and that was it. I interviewed with Dillard’s and three other companies. Dillard’s was my first choice."

The next day, Shemanske received a phone call offering him a position with Dillard’s. He was unsure of what the job would entail until he heard he would be working with the executive vice president.

"After I met with Mr. Dillard, he was excited about me working for him. The job will consist of four-month rotations that are all project-based in different parts of the corporate level functions. The first area will be purchasing," he said.

Shemanske will begin his two-year commitment in June.

"Ideally, if things go well, at the end of two years with the company, I will be offered a permanent position," Shemanske said.

Recent business graduate Kurt Shemanske will spend a two-year fellowship program working with Dillard’s, Inc., in Little Rock.
