CLARKSVILLE, ARK. (March 13, 2006) -- Sen. Dale Bumpers, a native of the Arkansas River Valley, will be the keynote speaker at University of the Ozarks’ spring 2006 commencement, to be held May 13 on the Ozarks campus in Clarksville. Born in Charleston, Arkansas, about 35 miles from Clarksville, Senator Bumpers served in the United States Marine Corps for three years during World War II. After completing his education he returned to Charleston, where he practiced law, operated a small furniture, hardware and appliance store and raised cattle. He served as city attorney in Charleston from 1952 until 1971, governor of Arkansas from 1971 to 1975 and was elected to the Senate in 1975, where he served four terms until his retirement in January 1999. Senator Bumpers and his wife, Betty, have for many years championed children’s health, especially childhood immuization, and were honored in 1999 by the National Institutes of Health, who named a new research facility on the NIH campus the Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center. Senator Bumpers is currently counsel with the Arent Fox law firm in Washington, D.C., where he represents clients including Riceland Foods, Sanofi Pasteur and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
