Clarksville, Ark. -- U of O senior Case White spends a lot of time moving in place -- for fun.
White, a general studies major from Franklin, Tenn. participated in the 2007 Tennessee Indoor Rowing Championships, competing against rowers from top college programs. Contestants rowed on individual rowing machines in 2,000 meter races. The scene inside the gym at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was intense, with up to 40 rowers straining against machines and coaches, friends and family shouting encouragement. White set and achieved a goal of finishing each of the three races he entered in under nine minutes. "My motto going in was ‘Feel the burn’" said White. "And I was able to do that!" An avid rower for nearly four years, White tries to row up to 6,000 meters every day on a rowing machine he keeps on campus. He also practiced his technique this past summer on the Tennessee River, and plans to row on the water again in the coming year. White also plans to enter next year’s competition in Tennessee, and says one his long-range goals is to log over 40 million meters, a distance that would be equivalent to rowing around the world. He recently surpassed 4.5 million meters, a distance of 2,857 miles.
