Tom Riddle, a senior mathematics major from Magazine, Ark., was named the 2014 recipient of the University of the Ozarks' prestigious Hurie Award during the 57th annual Awards Ceremony, held April 22 in the Rogers Conference Center.
Selected by the faculty, the Hurie Award is given to the outstanding member of the senior class and is the highest honor an Ozarks student can receive. It is named for Dr. Wiley Lin Hurie, who served as president of Ozarks from 1923 to 1949.
"It’s an incredible honor and I’m still in shock," Riddle said after receiving the award.
Riddle, who is graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors during the upcoming May 17 Commencement, has served as the president of the Student Foundation Board for the past two years. As president of SFB, Riddle has been heavily involved in helping recruit prospective students to the University as well as helping out during freshman orientation and Alumni Weekend. He has also served as a member of the Ozarks Mathematical Society and as Residential Advisor. In addition, he was selected as a member of Who’s Who Among College Students at American Universities and Colleges in 2013. He has made the academic honor roll in seven of his eight semesters at Ozarks.
Riddle, who is earning minors in physics and computer science, plans to pursue a graduate degree in physics at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville beginning in the fall.
Riddle is the son of Fred and Donna Riddle of Magazine and the grandson of Tommy and Irene Riddle of Atkins, Ark., and John and Gayla Isaacs of Magazine.
