The University of the Ozarks' Presidential Search Committee has begun to narrow the list of applicants in its quest to find the university's 25th president.

The Search Committee met on June 28 to begin the initial review of applicants to replace Dr. Rick Niece, who will retire in June of 2013 after 16 years as president of U of O.

Search Committee Chair Chris Allen of Clarksville, a member of the board of trustees, said the committee received almost 50 applications of candidates from throughout the United States.

"We were encouraged and pleased by the quality of candidates," Allen said. "The applications contained many excellent candidates."

The University is working with Dr. Jamie Ferrare with AGB Search as a consultant in the search.

Allen said the committee has begun to narrow the field "to the most promising candidates." Allen said AGB Search will spend the next couple of weeks vetting the candidates.

"Toward the end of July the committee will meet again to narrow the field down to 6-8 applicants that we will interview in person at an off-site location toward the end of August," Allen said.

The two or three finalists are expected to visit the university in September for on-campus interviews.

The Search Committee is made up of members of the board of trustees as well as representatives from the campus community and alumni.
