Clarksville, Ark. --- Renowned Arkansas poet Miller Williams will present a poetry reading at University of the Ozarks at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 14, in the Walton Fine Arts Center.
Williams’ appearance is part of the University’s 2009-2010 Walton Arts & Ideas Series. The event is open to the public and there is no charge for admission.
Williams is considered one of the foremost American poets of the post World War II era. An Arkansas native, Miller describes himself as a product of the rural, small-town environment of the South. He was selected to read his poem History and Hope at Bill Clinton’s 1997 inauguration.
Williams was a professor of English, foreign languages and comparative literature at the University of Arkansas for 33 years. He was a key figure in the university’s nationally known programs in creative writing and translation.
Williams is the author, editor, or translator of 31 volumes of poetry, literary criticism and fiction. Among his many honors are the Amy Lowell Traveling Scholarship in Poetry from Harvard University, the Poets’ Prize, the Prix de Rome for Literature and the Academy Award for Literature, the latter two from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is the father of three-time Grammy Award–winning singer and songwriter Lucinda Williams.
