Clarksville, Ark. --- Photographer Will Counts' photo documentary of the Little Rock Central High School crisis of 1957 will be on display at University of the Ozarks throughout the month of February as part of the university's Artist of the Month Series.
The exhibit is part of a touring show from the Arkansas Arts Center. The exhibit, which will run through Feb. 26, will be shown in the Stephens Gallery, located in the Walton Fine Arts Center. The gallery is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the week and there is no charge for admission.
Counts, who died in 2001, was a staff photographer for the Arkansas Democrat. The Little Rock native gained fame with his powerful images of the desegregation crisis at Central High School in September of 1957. His photos were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and one of his photographs took first place in the spot news category of the Encyclopedia Britannica News Picture of the Year.
Following brief stints at the Associated Press in Chicago and Indianapolis, Counts went on to help develop one of the best-regarded photojournalism departments in the country at Indiana University in Bloomington. He is the author of three books, including “A Photography Legacy,” which chronicles rural Arkansas scenes.
