Paralympic Champion Nicole Roundy

Nicole Roundy, a Paralympic snowboard champion and motivational speaker, will present a talk at University of the Ozarks on Wednesday, Feb. 15, as part of the University’s 2022-23 Walton Arts & Ideas Series.

Roundy’s event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Rogers Conference Center. The event is open to the public and there is no cost for admission.

As a child, Roundy was ambitious, energetic, and outgoing. She spent much of her childhood exploring the outdoors with her two older brothers. Then at 8-years-old, she was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Later that year she lost her right leg above the knee and continued aggressive chemotherapy treatment.

Like any individual touched by cancer, Roundy’s life dramatically turned. Following the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic games, she stepped onto a ski slope for the first time. The beauty, adrenaline, and excitement of three-track skiing captivated her, but something was missing. Deemed “impossible” due to a lack of prosthetic knee technology, Roundy found her passion in snowboarding.

In 2006 she became the first above-knee amputee, male or female, to compete in adaptive snowboarding. Her accomplishments spearheaded global demand for prosthetic knee technology and played a fundamental role in the introduction of snowboarding to the Paralympic roster. She represented the United States in the 2014 and 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. She was named World Champion in 2016 and took home 24 World Cup medals during her career.

Roundy retired from the circuit in 2018 and joined the board of Move United, an organization devoted to the promotion of parasports among youths and adults with physical disabilities. Move United operates community parasports programs via over 150 local chapters across the country.

Today, Roundy has transitioned to a career in the tech industry, is an accomplished motivational speaker, and holds a master’s degree in business management.
