Clarksville, Ark. --- The University of the Ozarks surpassed its goal by 33 percent in the American Red Cross Blood Drive, held Oct. 10 on the Ozarks campus.
U of O students, faculty and staff donated 80 units of blood, easily surpassing the university’s goal of 60 units. There were 39 first-time donors involved in the effort. ??? Marie Vargas, a freshman from Rowlett, Texas, said she has seen the importance of donating blood. "I’ve worked in a hospital in Dallas, so I’ve really been able to see first-hand how donating blood really does save lives," Vargas. "I think the tragedy from September 11 helped the turnout as well. It was great to see so many people there." ??? Sara Stucky, the secretary for the Sciences and Mathematics Division, said her battle with cancer prompted her to donate. ??? "I’m cancer-free now and have had to wait five years before I could donate blood after surgery, so this was an important milestone for me," Stucky said. "It’s a sign of my good health and the grace of God." ??? "Thanks to everyone who made this event a monumental success," said Business Professor Robert Wofford, the blood drive’s coordinator.
