Clarksville, Ark. --- Rockabilly Hall of Fame artists Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers will bring their brand of pioneer rock and roll music to the University of the Ozarks for a performance on Tuesday, March 1.
The performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Walton Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the box office on the evening of the show or by calling 479-979-1346. Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers have been playing music for 50 years, since the band was formed in 1955 in Newport, Ark. An original Sun Records recording artist, Burgess and his band members were considered bold pioneers of rock and roll, putting on legendary energy-filled performances throughout the Delta in the 1950s and 1960s. Burgess’ early performances combined the country sounds of the white South with the R&B, blues and shout gospel sounds of the black community. He is often credited with playing a role in the creation of rockabilly music. Burgess and the Pacers were inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in Jackson, Tenn., in 2002. Songs such as “We Wanna Boogie” and “Red Headed Woman” helped make Burgess and the Pacers a household name throughout the South in the 1950s. Burgess, along with other performers such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Billy Lee Riley and Charlie Rich, toured high school gyms in the South, playing their music and promoting their releases on Sun Records.
