Clarksville, Ark. -- University of the Ozarks Phi Beta Lambda Beta members took home four first-place awards and numerous other top-10 finishes in the 2007 Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference, held June 23-27 in Chicago.
Twenty-nine PBL members representing U of O earned a total of 17 awards at the PBL National Conference. In addition, Ozarks was awarded the Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit and took second place in the 13-state Southern Region in the category of Largest PBL Local Chapter. The Ozarks PBL organization had 108 active members during the 2006-2007 academic year.
Ozarks PBL members won four first-place awards. In the category of Management Concepts, the team of Marlon Clair, Denise Duarte and Tahis Ruiz won first place. In the category of Organizational Behavior, Duarte won first place. In the category of Community Service Project, Kari Wood took first place. And in the category of American Enterprise Project, the team of Shandy Russell, Lynda McCollum and Kristin Vines took first place.
Ozarks also took home three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes. Buddy Faulkner took second place in Future Business Executive; Duarte took second in Business Policy; and the team of Jorge Avila, Daniela Bermudez, Raquel Daboub and Jana Rossmaier finished second in Parliamentary Procedure. In the category of Business Ethics, the team of Ana Garcia, Enyinnaya Inyama and Michelle Linares finished third, and in the category of Local Chapter Business Report, Rossmaier took home third place.
The Ozarks PBL group, under the direction of head advisor Dr. Robert Hilton, also won three fifth-place finishes, two sixth-place finishes, two seven-place finishes and one eighth-place trophy.
"I could not be more proud of the way our team represented Ozarks," said Hilton. "We competed against universities that were much larger, but we more than held our own. For example, in the Community Service Project category, we beat California-Berkley for first place. That gives you an idea of the type of schools that were there. Twenty-four of the 29 students who competed for Ozarks won an award, and that is unheard of. It was an outstanding overall effort by our students."
