Clarksville, Ark. --- Nine Ozarks mathematics students competed in the annual Arkansas Undergraduate Mathematics Competition, held Feb. 24 at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Ozarks’ team Eratosthenes (Mei Yee Chew, Zi Jian Khor, and Sarah Reeves) took second place in the competition, with teams Hypatia (Lisa Mercer, Fidel Samour, and Amy Wonaphotimuke) and Apollonius (Evelyn Chin, Alicia Chua, and Kellie Tan) finishing in the top ten.

A total of eleven teams representing six Arkansas universities tested their mathematical knowledge and skills during the competition’s three hour exam.  The exam consisted of 10 questions covering mathematics topics such as algebra, geometry, number theory, calculus and combinatorics.  In this "no calculators allowed" competition, team members had to rely on their shared knowledge to solve the problems.

The members of team Eratosthenes are all mathematics majors.  Reeves is a sophomore from Hiwassee, Ark., while Khor and Chew are freshmen from Malaysia.  Reeves and Chew both plan to teach mathematics at the secondary level following graduation.  Khor plans to pursue graduate studies in mathematics.
