Clarksville, Ark. --- The Ozarks Alchemists and the Ozarks chemistry department will host a presentation by Dr. Colin Heyes, assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, on Thursday, December 1.

The presentation, entitled "Single Molecule Spectroscopy of Nanomaterials and Biomolecules: To the Average and Beyond…" will cover various aspects of the research being done by Dr. Heyes and his students at the U of A chemistry department.

This research focuses on understanding the physical principles that underlie interactions between biomolecules and how they relate to function. They are particularly interested in biomolecules that are involved in diseases such as cancer and those involved in solar energy conversion (photosynthesis). They are also synthesizing and studying new nanomaterials, which are not only helpful in their biophysical studies, but which may also have broader use in energy conversion, miniaturized optoelectronics, sensors and other devices.

Dr. Heyes earned his B.S. in chemistry from Loughborough University, UK, and his Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology. He did his postdoctoral work at University of Ulm, in Germany, and taught at McGill University, in Montreal, Canada prior to coming to Arkansas.

The presentation will take place at 7:00 pm in room 129 of the Smith-Broyles Science Center. It is free, and open to the public. Students interested in learning more about this research will have the opportunity to visit with Dr. Heyes following the presentation.
