Katie Kloepfer, a senior biology major from Lafe, Ark., has been named the university's Student Support Services (SSS) Tutor of the Year during the organization's annual awards ceremony on May 6.

Staff members from SSS announced the tutor awards in several subject areas during the ceremony. Award recipients were selected based on their work ethic, knowledge of the subject area, and nominations from the students they tutor.

Kimberly Spicer, SSS Program Coordinator, said "peer tutors are essential to the success of our tutoring program, as well as to our participant’s academic careers. We provide specific training for our tutors and expect them to give their very best to work with students who need help with understanding the course material. We are proud of all of our tutors and note takers and appreciate their contribution to the success of many of our participants."

Those receiving awards in the various categories included:

  • SSS Tutor of the Year: Katie Kloepfer
  • Business: Mario Lopez
  • Education/Communications: Shawnee Sorensen
  • Humanities & Fine Arts: Irma Flowers
  • Math: Adam Geller and Tom Riddle
  • Science: Brandi Morgan
  • Writing/Composition: Allie Daniels

All SSS tutors are recommended by a faculty member, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and have received either an A or a B in the course in which they tutor. Student Support Services is a federally funded TRIO program that encourages and motivates students to complete a post-secondary education. The Ozarks’ SSS program serves over 180 participants and provides academic advising, tutoring, counseling, and financial aid information. All services are free to eligible students.
