Dr. Thomas "Tom" Jones, ambassador-at-large for Habitat for Humanity International, will speak at University of the Ozarks at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, as part of the University's Walton Arts & Ideas Series.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Rowntree Recital Hall on campus. There will be a question-and-answer session following Jones’ lecture.

After serving as vice president and founding managing director of Habitat for Humanity International’s Washington office from1991 to 2005, Jones was named Habitat’s ambassador-at-large in the office of the CEO in 2005. He continues to serve in that capacity as a member of Habitat’s senior leadership team.

As ambassador-at-large, Jones represents Habitat for Humanity and its CEO in meetings with, and presentations to, individuals and groups. He offers particular insight into Habitat’s history as well as its interfaith and advocacy initiatives. As the staff leader for Habitat’s interfaith exploration, he guides efforts to bring together religious faiths whose theologies call members to care for the poor, with decent housing as a core issue in overcoming poverty.

Jones has earned the bachelor of arts, master of divinity, master of theology and doctor of ministry degrees, and has also received an honorary doctor of divinity degree. Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary honored him with its distinguished alum award.

Prior to his tenure with Habitat for Humanity International, Jones served as pastor of four Presbyterian congregations in Kentucky and Florida, and for 12 years was senior pastor of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. In the academic world, he has served as vice president for a theological seminary, as a faculty member at two seminaries, and as a national staff person of the Presbyterian denomination. He has served on many denominational, ecumenical, national, community, college and other boards. He is the author of many articles and two books, including "The Power Behind the Hammer," a collection of prayers written for Habitat’s senior leadership team.

Jones is a speaker of national reputation, including a variety of national and international radio and television appearances. He has made presentations to hundreds of groups, some as large as 10,000. Recent titles for speeches made on behalf of Habitat for Humanity include "The Power Behind the Hammer," "Love in Action: A Two-way Street," and "Savor the Blessing."
