Lively performances highlights student talents

CLARKSVILLE, ARK. (April 28, 2006) -- University of the Ozarks’ annual gallery gig brought the house down, as student singers and conductors had the audience clapping along through a rollicking performance April 25. The university’s select mixed ensemble and university chorus performed a program featuring two spirituals, including a rousing version of "Swinging with the Saints," which closed the show. Ozarks junior Dustin Parsons said the singing groups prepared for the performance under pressure following their March tour of churches in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. "We learned all our songs in just a few weeks,” said Parsons, who led three Ozarks students in singing “Oh Happy Day.” “It all just came together.” Students Andria Askins, Amanda Stang and Johnny Wong each conducted a musical number as well, following their completion of Ozarks’ class on basic conducting with Ozarks Choral Director and Assistant Professor of Music Mikael Lindstrom. “They didn’t have to go by my instruction,” Lindstrom said. “They could try something else that works ? that’s how you learn conducting.” Lindstrom said he is looking forward to even more student participation in next year’s performance, with students selecting the music for half of the program. “I’ll help students any way I can, but they will be in charge of the music,” said Lindstrom. “It gives them a chance to really own a part of the music.”
