Clarksville, Ark. --- Food historian, author, and speaker Dr. James Tuten will present a lecture on Thursday, September 9th, at 8:00 pm in Rowntree Recital Hall in the Walton Fine Arts Center on the University of the Ozarks campus.
Dr. Tuten’s research focuses on Atlantic Coast rice culture from the Civil War until the industry collapsed in the 1920s. His work culminated in publication of his book Lowcountry Time and Tide: The Fall of the Rice Kingdom (USC Press) in 2010. His lecture, entitled Barbecue, Rice and Madeira: Lessons from the History of Food, will address his research into the rice culture and the southern planters affinity for Madeira wine.
Dr. Tuten is Associate Professor of History at Juniata College in Pennsylvania, where he specializes in the history of the southern United States. His teaching interests include the Civil War and Reconstruction, the New South, and the history of food. He is a regular contributor to the general education program at Juniata College through the College Writing Seminar and an interdisciplinary course called Shaping The American Mind. He earned his PhD from Emory University and an MA from Wake Forest University. He earned his BA in History and Fine Arts from the College of Charleston.
Dr. Tuten has contributed book chapters, numerous book reviews, and encyclopedia entries to a range of publications. His editorials have appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Harrisburg Patriot News, Christian Science Monitor, the Providence Journal (RI), Inside Higher Ed, and the Altoona Mirror. He is the founder of an H-Net discussion list on the history and culture of South Carolina, H-SC. From 2000-2006 he served as Juniata’s Assistant Provost.
