"Leap" is one of the works by Duc Tran that will be on display in the Stephens Gallery through the month of November.

The exhibit will run through Nov. 23 in the Stephens Gallery, located in the Walton Fine Arts Center on the U of O campus. The gallery is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the week and there is no charge for admission. There will be a reception to meet the artist from 6-7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 1, in the gallery.

Tran, a Batesville, Ark., resident and graduate of Arkansas Tech University, said he primarily uses white and a hue of three primary colors: red, blue and yellow.

“I avoid black in color paintings because I feel that black dulls the colors,” he said. “My darks and shadows are usually a mixture of red and blue, sometimes a reddish brown or dark green. My grays are a mixture of all the colors either lightened by white or darkened by blue. My flesh tones are usually a mixture of white, red, a little bit of yellow and a tiny bit of blue when needed. I always darken my colors with blue or a mixture of blue and red. There are various techniques to make the eye see a certain color or shade without using the actual color, such as a dark shadow without using the darkest color, or the brightest highlight without using pure white.”
