Faheema Eissar, a native of Afghanistan and a leading advocate for the education and empowerment of women from that country, will speak at University of the Ozarks on Wednesday, Sept. 17, as part of the University's 2014-15 Walton Arts & Ideas Series.

The lecture, the first Walton Series event of the academic year, will begin at 7 p.m. in Baldor Auditorium, located in the University’s Boreham Business Building. The event is free and open to the public.
A native of Kabul, Afghanistan, Eissar is a 2013 graduate of Hanover College in Indiana and works with the Initiative to Educate Afghan Women (IEAW), which is based in Providence, R.I. The title of her talk at Ozarks will be "Why Educate Women."
Eissar said that the IEWA has helped 71 Afghan women earn college diplomas and another 18 students are currently enrolled with full four-year scholarships. A total of 21 colleges and universities in the United States have been involved in the program.
"Since 2002, the IEAW has worked to create a network of Afghan women in Afghanistan helping other women and poised to assume leadership roles by providing U.S. undergraduate education, social entrepreneurship training, and career guidance," Eissar said. "Their vision is a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan in which women participate fully in the political, economic and social development of their homeland."
